Because laser therapy is non-invasive and drug-free, it’s a great choice for pets who aren’t able to tolerate other forms of treatment or to use in conjunction with existing treatments. It has been shown to reduce pain and inflammation in certain parts of the body, with almost instant results following the treatment.
Many conditions can benefit from laser therapy, including:
- Arthritis
- Pain management
- Skin problems
- Dental procedures
- Post-operative recovery
While laser therapy is effective for many conditions, it is not recommended for use on pregnant animals, testicles, eyes, tumors, or any actively bleeding sites. Our veterinarians will walk you through what treatments we think are appropriate for your pet’s condition.
How Laser Therapy Works
Laser therapy is an innovative treatment that utilizes light energy to help promote healing in certain areas of the body. The lasers used in these treatments use a single wavelength of concentrated light energy to penetrate layers of the body’s tissues. The concentrated energy promotes changes at the cellular level, boosting the healing power of the cells inside of your pet’s body.
Your Laser Therapy at North Davidson
When your pet has a laser therapy at North Davidson, our Lexington veterinarians will have your pet lie down on an exam table for the duration of their treatment, which can last as little as three minutes. A handheld device is used to aim the laser at the part of the body which requires treatment. You are welcome to stay in the room with your pet to keep them calm and relaxed for the procedure. Everyone - including your pet! - is required to wear special protective goggles to shield their eyes from the laser while it is in use. Both pets and humans can experience eye damage or burns if they are not wearing protective gear or if the device is used improperly.
With laser therapy, there is no recovery time. You’ll be able to bring your pet home as soon as we finish the treatment! Your pet should also immediately feel relief from pain. Some pets and some conditions may require multiple treatments to get the full benefit of laser therapy. Your veterinarian will advise you as to your pet’s treatment plan.
